This is a 9” by 12” pen and ink drawing on acid free water color paper. This piece is part of a series using imagery from the Russian folk tale “Vailisa’s doll”. You can read the entire story here: http://www.oldrussia.net/vas.html. Using the lovely imagery and strong archetypes in the story I am making a personal allegory about my relationships with the most important women in my life. The portion of the story this pieces takes imagery from:“Vasilisa, by now terrified at the way the old witch was looking at her, somehow managed to stutter out:‘My mother’s blessing helped me!’Baba Yaga sprang at her foaming with rage.‘Get out!’ she howled at her, pushing her out of the hut.‘I want no blessed daughters near me! Your mother’s blessing hurts my very bones! Get out of here!’….Baba Yaga seized one of the burning-eyed skulls, shoved it on to the end of a stick and thrust it into her hand saying:‘Here’s the fire for your stepmother’s daughters. Take it to them. That’s what they sent you here for, and I hope they enjoy every bit of it!’Vasilisa took the glowing skull, which lit up her way, and raced off with it into the forest. She kept going all night long, wanting to get as far away from the old witch as she could.”

Things I would love to do this year…

Things I would love to make happen this year: I’ve always wanted to have a moth tattoo. I love this one:

I would really like to finish the entire series of allegorical paintings I am working on inspired by Vasilisa’s Doll. Detail of one I am working on now:

 vasdillprog

I want to go to the beach and wear lots and lots of sunscreen and wear a dark olive green bikini and a very big hat. I want Joe to come and eat an oversized piece of boardwalk pizza.

I want to visit the Mercer museum. My brother has been wanting to go for awhile now. I’d also like to visit the MET again sooner, rather than later.

I want to attack my cats with a giant squid:

And I want to spend more time talking to my plants, listening to the weather and watching the always moving world go by me.

This is the sometimes gross progress of changing a painting. It is not the process that my paintings normal go through but rather a really extensive revision

The Vasilisa’s Doll Series

Linsay Blondeau, a wonderful artist, sent me a doll based on the Russian fairy tale “Vasilisa the beautiful”. She sent it at a sad time for me, when I needed it. It very much reminded me of when I was a little girl and I always carried around a doll my mother had given me for protection. I needed to feel secure, my world was tumultous.

After a trip with brilliant artists seeing amazing works of art at the MET and PAFA I realized I could work up an allegory using “Vasilisa the beautiful” as a frame work to speak autobiographically about my relationship with important women in my life, mostly my mother and grandmother. The idea developed into 6 paintings I have seen in my own head. The painting I am currently working on is the last one in the series, a self portrait as an adult still carrying around a doll that makes  me feel safe. The additional information I am putting into the background is the beginning of my story. I began revising the painting 3 months ago.  I felt it had more to offer.

One such inclusion is imagery based on “Saturn Devouring his Son” by Goya. It’s part of the bushes and I am using it as a dorsien. Baba Yaga, the witch in the Vasilisa’s Doll story is a very complicated character. (Please read the story for reference if you like: http://www.oldrussia.net/vas.html.) I imagine her for my purpose as having started out as a very caring mother with two daughters. Her fear of the world harming them overcame her and she devoured the girls so they could be kept safe inside her stomach once again. I expand on this part of the story in another painting. For my purpose in this first painting the bushes are showing, through careful arrangement of light and branches, the young baba yaga committing the act. I am also including two trees from the Medieval tapestry “Lady with Unicorn” arranged on either side of my self portrait. The trees are being included as symbols of hopefulness and life and are set apart from the rest of the scene. They also give me the oppurtunity to paint something in the middle ground that is pattern oriented and emphasizes the picture space. I want this series to look like American folk art meets The Delft School and has an affair with Maxfield Parrish.

I plan on writing more about the series but as a visual person, I don’t know how well I am doing explaining myself. Feel free to tell me to shut up and paint!
